Lakewood Heights is a neighborhood that lies west of Lakewood and White Rock Lake in the greater Lakewood area of East Dallas, TX.   The total size of the neighborhood is approximately 220 acres which is just over one-third of a square mile.  Approximately 1,000 homes are located within the neighborhood.  The boundaries of Lakewood Heights are Monticello Avenue to the north, Skillman Street to the west, Richmond Avenue to the south, and Abrams Road to the east.

History of Lakewood Heights

The first homes in Lakewood Heights were built in the 1910s and 1920s.  By the 1940s, almost all lots had homes.  Tietze Park, the nine acre park that lies on the west side of the neighborhood, was formed in 1924 and has undergone substantial renovations and improvements over the last 15 years.  Today, it is one of the most frequently-used parks in the city of Dallas.

The Lakewood Heights neighborhood has some of the most architecturally significant homes in Dallas.  The neighborhood is a mix of older homes, including Tudors, Prairies, Bungalows and Craftsman – many of which have been preserved and restored to their original condition – as well as newer, custom-built homes that encompass many older and newer architectural styles.  The neighborhood has a very unique character and the pride of its residents reflects in how they care for their homes and the neighborhood itself.

Currently there is not a historic or conservation district located within the boundaries of Lakewood Heights.

Lakewood Heights has a variety of entertainment and recreational options for every lifestyle. Home buyers that appreciate an outdoor lifestyle will love the numerous parks in and near the neighborhood and its proximity to White Rock Lake.  The neighborhood is also very close to some of the best entertainment and shopping Dallas has to offer.

Parks and Recreation in and near Lakewood Heights:

  • Tietze Park – A nine acre park located on the west side of Lakewood Heights that has a baseball diamond, public swimming pool, playground equipment, walking/jogging trails and picnic tables.
  • White Rock Lake – With 10 miles of biking and jogging trails, picnic tables, and wonderful views, White Rock Lake is the recreational focal point of East Dallas and is located just a short distance east of Lakewood Heights.
  • Lakewood Park – Located just a short distance east in Lakewood Proper, Lakewood Park has a large area of children’s playground equipment, a basketball court, and covered picnic tables.

Restaurants, Entertainment and Shopping close to Lakewood Heights:

  • Lower Greenville – one of the most popular entertainment districts in Dallas, Lower Greenville has a collection of some of the most diverse restaurants and bars in DFW as well as the Granada Theater, a Trader Joe’s, and The Green Grocer.
  • Lakewood Area – Located just a short distance from Lakewood Heights is the Lakewood Shopping Center, a collection of retail stores and restaurants that include Mi Cocina, The Gingerman, Liberty Burger, The Cock and Bull, the Lakewood Theater, The Balcony Club and Arcade Bar.

The Lakewood Heights Neighborhood Association

Lakewood Heights has a voluntary neighborhood association (The Lakewood Heights Neighborhood Association) that serves to protect various interests of neighborhood residents, promote area businesses and prevent crime in the neighborhood.  Membership in the association is voluntary and the modest dues go towards improving life for all residents of the neighborhood.

The association has volunteer committees that oversee neighborhood services, zoning issues, communications, crime watch, traffic, Tietze Park, social events, fundraising, and the Yard of the Month Award.  The neighborhood association also has volunteers from each street that serve as block captains.  The neighborhood association either sponsors or promotes various social activities and events throughout the year in Lakewood Heights.

Lakewood Heights Schools

The Lakewood Heights neighborhood is served entirely by the Dallas ISD.  Children of residents attend the following schools based on attendance zones:

Elementary School (Grades K-5th) – The Lakewood Heights neighborhood lies within the attendance zones of two elementary schools.  Parents should verify attendance zones by using the DISD Find Attendance Zone by Address Search Tool.

The northern part of the neighborhood is served by Stonewall Jackson Elementary located at 5828 E. Mockingbird Lane, just north and east of Lakewood Heights on the southeast corner of Mockingbird and Matilda. Stonewall Jackson has a 20,000 square foot garden where students plant and tend to crops, learn about the complex workings of a garden ecosystem, and conduct various experiments.

The south side of Lakewood Heights is served by Robert E Lee Elementary located at 2901 Delmar.

Middle School (Grades 6-8) The Lakewood Heights neighborhood lies in the attendance zone of J.L. Long Middle School located at 6116 Reiger Avenue just a short distance south of Lakewood Heights. J.L. Long was recently accepted into the International Baccalaureate middle years program which provides a framework which seeks to make practical connections between students’ schoolwork and the real world.

High School (Grades 9-12) The Lakewood Heights neighborhood lies in the attendance zone of Woodrow Wilson High School located at .

  • Lakehill Preparatory School – Established in 1971 and located just east of Lakewood Heights in Lakewood Proper, this fully-accredited co-ed school offers a rigorous college-prep curriculum and several athletic programs.
  • Bishop Lynch High School – Founded in 1963, Bishop Lynch is a co-educational Catholic high school serving grades 9-12.  Noted for its superb academic and athletic programs, their students have won several state championships in various sports.
  • St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic School – Founded in 1947, this Catholic school serves grades PK3 through 8th and was named a National Blue Ribbon School in 2012.  St. Thomas has two campuses just north of Lakewood Heights: one located on Mockingbird Lane and the other on Abrams Road.
  • White Rock Montessori School – Founded in 1975, this innovative school serves ages three through 8th grade and is located east of White Rock Lake just a few miles from most of Lakewood Heights.
